Do the Upper Chakras Move Faster than the Lower?

In many spiritual systems, especially those rooted in yoga, tantra, and energy healing, chakras are viewed as vortices or wheels of energy that resonate at different frequencies. One common idea is that the upper chakras (Third Eye, Crown) vibrate more rapidly than the lower chakras (Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus). But what does this really mean — and how far can we take it?
Vibrational Frequency & Resonance
Every chakra is said to “resonate” with a particular frequency or range of frequencies. Because the lower chakras deal with denser, more material energy, their vibration is often considered slower or “heavier.” The upper chakras, which handle subtler, spiritual energies, are thought to vibrate at higher, finer frequencies.
Some sound-healing and solfeggio-based systems assign specific frequencies to each chakra. For example:
Root Chakra — 396 Hz
Sacral Chakra — 417 Hz
Solar Plexus — 528 Hz
Heart Chakra — 639 Hz
Throat — 741 Hz
Third Eye — 852 Hz
Crown Chakra — 963 Hz
These numbers are tools for meditation or sound healing; they’re not universal truths but symbolic representations of energetic “pitch.”
Density, Energy Quality & Movement
Another way to think of it: the denser the energy, the slower the “spin.” The lower chakras anchor us to the physical—survival, emotions, identity—so their energy is more “thick.” The upper chakras are associated with expanding awareness, intuition, and spiritual connection, which require a more refined frequency.
In fact, some spiritual writers describe chakra rotation as akin to how a turbine or propeller responds to a flow of energy: the stronger and more refined the upward current (prana, kundalini), the faster the higher‐level chakras turn.
That said, speed itself is not a direct measure of health. An overactive chakra can be erratic; an underactive one can feel blocked. The aim is harmonious rotation—not mindless acceleration.
The Path of Spiritual Development & Ascending Energy
The idea that energy travels upward from the lower chakras to the upper ones mirrors the arc of spiritual awakening in many traditions.
Kundalini & the Rising Serpent
In yogic and tantric practices, there is the concept of Kundalini, an energetic force coiled at the base of the spine (Muladhara). When awakened, this energy is said to travel through the central channel (the Sushumna Nadi) and pass through each chakra in sequence until it reaches the Crown (Sahasrara). This rising journey brings transformation, deeper awareness, and often intense inner experiences. The scriptures and yogic commentaries often describe this as a “serpent uncoiling” and ascending through successive energy centers, opening and purifying them as it goes.
From Survival to Enlightenment
This energetic ascent parallels our inner journey:
Beginning with earthly concerns (safety, relationships, purpose)
Moving into emotional balance, love, expression
Proceeding toward intuition, inner wisdom, and finally
Unity, transcendence, and connection with universal consciousness
When the energy reaches the Crown, it is often said to merge with a higher principle (cosmic consciousness, divine self, or universal Truth). This is sometimes called enlightenment or self-realization.
However, the path is seldom linear or purely upward. Healing and integration at lower levels often must accompany spiritual opening.
Additional Layers: Nadis, Prana & Chakras in Integration
To deepen the picture, here are a few more concepts from yogic subtle anatomy:
Nadis: These are energy channels (subtle conduits) through which prana (life force) flows. The three primary ones are Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna. In many systems, Kundalini rises through Sushumna once it is awakened and the side channels are balanced.
Prana & Apana: Balancing upward-moving prana (life force) and downward-moving apana (eliminating energy) is essential to prevent energy from stagnating or causing disturbance.
Bandhas, Mudras, Pranayama & Sound: Techniques such as breath control (pranayama), energetic locks (bandhas), symbolic gestures (mudras), and mantra/sound work help regulate, channel, and fine-tune the movement of energy upward.
Balance, Health & Cautions
Overactive chakras: If a chakra spins too fast or erratically, one may feel scattered, restless, or “out of control.”
Underactive chakras: Sluggish or blocked energy may manifest as lethargy, fear, stiffness, or emotional heaviness.
Balanced chakra: A chakra that spins with steady, harmonious motion supports integration, flow, and alignment across body, mind, soul.
Because awakening energy is powerful, many traditions caution not to rush or force the process. Working with a teacher or gradual, grounded practice is often advised.
Guided Practice Suggestion (Meditation to Sense Energy Flow)
Here’s a simple meditation your readers can try:
Settle and groundSit comfortably with a straight spine. Take several slow, deep breaths. Imagine roots growing from your Root chakra deep into the Earth.
Scan upwardBring awareness to each chakra in turn—from the Root, to Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, to Crown. Pause briefly at each, sensing its color, quality, or sensation.
Visualize ascending energyVisualize a warm, bright current (or spiral of light) rising from the base of your spine, passing through each chakra, clearing and awakening each in turn, until it reaches your Crown and expands upward into the sky.
Tune in to subtle vibrationAt the Crown, rest in awareness for a few breaths. Notice any subtle vibration, lightness, or stillness. Let the energy settle.
Return with integrationWhen ready, gently bring your awareness back down the spine, grounding your energy. Take a few breaths and open your eyes.
You can support this meditation by playing ambient tones in the chakra frequencies or gentle binaural soundscapes.
Yes—the upper chakras are traditionally said to move “faster” than the lower ones, but only in a metaphorical or symbolic sense of refined vibration and subtle energy. The real goal is balance, harmony, and integration, not chasing speed.
The journey of energy from Root to Crown beautifully mirrors our spiritual evolution: a path from survival to transcendence. Yet, this path is not a ladder to be climbed aggressively—it's a delicate unfolding of inner alignment.
